Chinese Chicken

  • Recipes

This recipe for easy Chinese Chicken Style is a delicious savory street food you can make at home with sesame seeds, garlic, onions, and coconut amino sauce for that signature flavor without eating food from the street.

What is Chinese chicken?

Chinese chicken is a street meal or convenience food you can find all over the streets of NY. The traditional dish is fried chicken with orange juice served over rice with a rich sugary sauce. Growing up my mom used to order Chinese food every Friday, I could find it on almost every street in NY or Jersey. I would say it’s an iconic Chinese food!

Of course, it’s anything but healthy-friendly. So I wanted to experiment with a healthier version of this classic dish. The resulting recipe has all of the same savory, sweet and tangy flavors. And this dish makes a delicious substitute for traditional street Chinese chicken.

The marinade itself is vegan-friendly. To make the traditional Chinese chicken sauce vegan and healthier, I substitute the fried and coated chicken with sauteed fresh ginger! I used dried coconut amino instead of soy sauce instead of sugar I added some raw honey which adds a sweet and tangy flavor, I made it with white meat the traditional is made with dark chicken parts.

Ingredient Notes

Here’s what you need to make a healthier version of Chinese Chicken:

White Chicken Breast. For this recipe, be sure to use white meat not dark meat. The difference between white and dark meat is important because it contains high-quality protein low fat contains the dark meat contains higher fat and the cut of the white meat is softer. and the cut of the meat when you eat it is soft.

Soy sauce. I use gluten-free and coconut amino soy sauce or tamari.

Rice wine. Add a bit of acidity to the marinade.

Raw honey. You could use coconut sugar if you prefer but the texture comes out better for my taste.

Five-spice. This is easy to find at Asian markets and well-stocked grocery stores like Whole Foods.

Cornstarch. Arrowroot powder also works to crisp your tofu steaks.

  • 2 tablespoons of sesame oil (separated)

  • 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon siracha

  • 1 teaspoon arrowroot

  • 2 tablespoons of toasted sesame seeds

Directions

  • Cut the chicken breasts into cubes, season with salt and pepper and put them in a glass container.
  • In a bowl mix all the ingredients (except 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, the arrowroot and sesame seeds).
  • Pour half of the sauce into the chicken cubes and massage well so they are all covered.
  • Marinate for a minimum of 30 minutes up to 1 day (the longer the time, the better the flavor)

  • Add the sauce to the pan with the chicken and cook for 3 more minutes until the sauce thickens.
  • Serve with sesame seeds and cauliflower rice.
