Working Out on Vacation

One of the biggest temptations we face while on vacation is to not bother anymore with our usual exercise or diet routines. After all, it’s a vacation and you shouldn’t have to worry about any of that while you’re having fun. But is that the best approach to take? Would you rather put yourself through the torture of having to find your motivation and rhythm all over again after your vacation is done?

For me, I think the question we should be asking is; How can I fit my exercise routines into my vacation without ruining my vacation?  Below I’m going to be sharing some tips on how you can achieve this with the least possible efforts.

Walk

One of my favorite things I love to do while on vacation is to check out new places, on foot! This way, I usually get to see things I wouldn’t necessarily see if I just stuck to my normal tourist routine. While it’s an excellent idea to plan your vacation runs ahead of your trips, this is probably one great way to get your muscles active if you feel you’re not getting enough exercise while on vacation.

Get up before everyone else

Staying up late nights is one very common characteristic of holidays and vacations especially when you’re together with family and friends. However, building the mindset of having a set time to go to bed so that your body gets enough rest and you’re also able to wake up before everyone else and throw in a short workout will prove very helpful and set you up perfectly to enjoy the rest of your day with your loved ones.

Workout with others

Why not be the one to initiate an exercise routine for everyone? That’s another fun way to hook up and bond with others while on vacation. It doesn’t have to be intense, just a couple of simple exercises to get you sweating, your hearts beating, and enjoying a good laugh while you’re at it. You could also be dancing to your favorite tunes during the exercise, it’s all part of the fun.

Recognize how good exercises make you feel.

Remember that feeling you get just after your regular morning exercises or intense workout sessions? That deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment you feel, while you’re also loving every bit of your body at that same instance. Yes, that memory helps!

Whenever you’re struggling to find the motivation you need to get grinding with your exercise routines, remind yourself of the rewards you might be missing out on if you don’t go through with it. The promise of that feeling is enough to motivate you to get up and go.

Try Something New

Vacation trips are probably a good time to try out new and interesting ways of working your body. You’re most likely outside of your comfort zone and so you’re more open to other ways, other people try to achieve similar results.

Hiking, Booking a Pilates class, or putting the hotel gym equipment to good use are other fun ways of keeping fit while you’re on vacation (make sure to find out the hotel you’re staying in has a gym before booking). This way, you can try out other gym equipment in the hotel that is not in your local gym. Get creative with them and have fun while you’re at it.

Designated place

I usually travel with my portable gym equipment on the go whenever I’m away from home even if it’s just for a couple of days. Below is a list of some of these portable gym travel items and I recommend you get yourself a set of these items.

  • Resistance bands. They are by far one of the best portable gym tools available when it comes to travel workout tools. With the right set of bands, you have more than enough to put your body through the pressure of an effective daily workout routine and even build muscles in the process. You can do a ton of exercises with just the resistance bands to help build both your upper and lower body. They can fold up or down, are incredibly small, and weigh next to nothing. If you’re already thinking of the extra space you’ll need for any of these items; a resistance band can easily slide into any corner of your luggage without being noticed. These resistance bands from MKAS and Gym Bandit are some of my favorites.

  • Yoga Mat
While this might not pass as one of the most portable workout travel items, yet they make a very good addition to your kit considering its many applications, and they can also be neatly rolled up and easily fastened to the outside of your backpack or duffel bag. Yoga mats are useful not just for yoga. You can use them when you feel like sitting out or lying down outdoors to enjoy more of the fresh air or the gentle ocean breeze if you’re vacationing close to a beachside. Yoga mats are also a great platform to be used for core exercises like pilates, meditation, and stretching, etc.

  • Jump Rope
Looking to engage more in some extra cardio that you’re on vacation? The Sonic Boom M2 High-Speed jump rope is probably the best item to pass as the perfect portable exercise equipment you can add to your kit while traveling. Jumping ropes are ideal to get your heart rates going while you’re on the same spot. Also combining jumping ropes with TRX or a resistance band workout will probably make your exercise pass as a complete daily cardio workout routine. Most of them are also very small and easily foldable so you wouldn’t notice if you slipped them into the side of your luggage.

  • TRX
If you’re someone who loves suspension training, then you’ve most likely seen or used the lightweight and ever-so-portable TRX. Working out using the TRX is a highly effective workout routine that gets to every major muscle in your body by utilizing your body weight. It helps to build muscles and also gets your heart beating. All you’ll need is the lightweight TRX and a beam or tree branch to hang it from.

Want to get in on some of my top home workout routines? Try these at home.

  1. Total body workout with Kettle
  2. Crush HIIT and Upper body

For gym workouts, hiking is my thing.

You don’t have to be intense, just be consistent.
