Ways to Relieve Stress

  • Wellness

Stress is a natural part of everyone’s life. We are all affected by stress sooner or later, too much stress on the other hand over an extended period of time is where the problem lies. It’s bad for our mental, emotional and physical, and even spiritual health. Therefore reducing the impact stress has in our lives is very important if we intend to live a happier and more fulfilling life.

Stress issues can range from anything to everything in our daily lives, which is why it is very difficult to avoid. From family issues, relationship issues, financial tensions, work pressures, traffic, or noisy/lousy neighbors to natural events like pregnancy, marriage, relocation, change of jobs, or the death of a friend or a loved one; any of these events is enough to take a negative toll on our lives hence the need for people to constantly seek out tips that will help them avoid or manage stress in their daily lives.

Sometimes stress is difficult to pinpoint in our lives even though we’re experiencing it. When asked to talk about it, we try our best to describe how it feels to us or what it makes us do, but it’s hard for us to say what it really is. Stress therefore can be described as our reaction towards physical, physiological, psychological, or emotional change that happens in our lives and we’re all aware that change is a constant in life.

Stress can even be caused by the demands we put on ourselves. Excessive worrying (even though with good reason) can put your health and mental well-being under undue stress. The way we view, approach, and attend to life’s issues can also impact our stress levels and we can go on and on about the stress factors of life.

In this article, I’d be sharing with you several tips and techniques to help you relieve stress in your life. There are many fun things we can do to relieve stress, all you need to do sometimes is to get creative and ask yourself, “What do I like to do for fun?” and that could be it. Even a simple exercise like taking deep breaths slowly can help you feel more relaxed and relieve stress even if it’s just momentarily.

However, by way of bullet points, I’d like to share with you seven simple tips you can adopt to help you relieve stress in your everyday lives

  1. Go out and get active: Going outdoors and being active in the fresh air could be all you need to relieve yourself of stress. While you’re at it, you can also look for fun activities to do like: playing a game of miniature golf, having a snowball fight, horseback riding, going on a scavenger hunt, and the list is endless. These activities will get your heart pumping and will also pass as exercise so you’re actually achieving two things at once.
  2. Dance: Dancing is another good option if you’re looking to relieve stress. Any kind of dancing will work, especially the ones you wouldn’t want any other eyes to see. The kind where you just lose yourself and feel like you’re a child once again.
  3. Sing: Singing by yourself or with others is another fun way to relieve stress. Singing requires you to breathe deeply and this on its own helps you to release tension and gets oxygen flowing in your bloodstream. You don’t need a fantastic voice before you decide to sing, just sing because your mind and your body need you to.
  4. Exercise: Straight-up exercise works wonders all the time. You don’t have to be a fan, if you practice it, it will work for you and it can be very effective. Regular, measured exercise keeps your body active and healthy and gives you the capacity to engage in your everyday life without having to feel stressed out in the first place.
  5. Listen to music: Another great way to relieve stress is by listening to music. Music that makes you feel good and can help you to relax whenever you need to. Even the loud and upbeat ones work too, depending on your mood and as long as it’s songs you enjoy listening to.
  6. Laugh: Ever heard the saying “Laughter is the best medicine”? This saying is true in more ways than many. How do you feel when you go on social media and find a funny video that gets you laughing so hard your stomach hurts? That’s one very effective way to deal with stress. So long as you don’t seek too much of it, such that it becomes vain and begins to affect your productivity in other areas of your life, causing you more stress in the process.
  7. Take time out for yourself: Ever heard of “Do nothing day?” Yes, this works for me all the time. It’s not that I don’t get to do anything at all, it’s just that I clear my tasks for the day and reserve the whole day entirely to myself. No pressures, no worries; I make sure everything I do on that day are only the things I want to do and that’s all the reason I need to do it.

As often as you can, take little time off to think rationally about any and every situation we may find ourselves in. That way, we can gain more clarity to see that things may not really be as bad as we first feared. Approaching life’s issues with a positive attitude and then taking positive actions afterward can go a long way to save us a lot of worries and help us deal with stress in our lives.

We may not be able to control everything that life throws at us, but we have the power to control how we react to them.
