How to Maintain Your Diet during Family Gatherings

  • Wellness

It is the end of the year already. It’s that time of the year when you gather around family and friends to party, celebrate or just share moments with each other and oftentimes, these activities come with a lot of eating and drinking.

If you are like most people then there is a very high likelihood of gaining between 5 -10 pounds over the parties and family gatherings season. I’m sure you know why that is, with all of the fattening treats and meals that’ll be thrust in your face from well-meaning friends who are hoping you get to taste some of their delicious servings, saying no to them would probably be construed as being rude.

This doesn’t mean you have to stuff yourself with all sorts that you are served at every party or dinner you’re invited to. The key is to eat in moderation.

Since you’re aware that you will be exposed to several servings that are likely high in calories or fats during this season, then you should make sure you are eating very healthy in your own home environment while watching very carefully how you indulge outside of the house.

By maintaining very strict healthy eating habits in the home, you’d be able to afford a little spurge at parties and family dinners.

In order to be able to maintain your weight over this time of the year “December” there are a few tips you can learn to keep you on your toes. In this article, I am going to share with you some of my top seven ways I adopt to maintain my weight during this time of the year.

If you apply these tips, they’ll help keep you more energized, and in a happier mood so you don’t necessarily need to worry about weight gain throughout this season.

My Tips

  1. Eat small portions. One simple trick to adopt during this season is to eat small portions of whatever you’re having. This way, you can afford to eat whatever you want as long as they’re in small portions. This would require a lot of discipline, and would mean you do not get carried away with all of the fun and excitement; however if you can, it’ll be well worth it in the long run.
  2. Keep to your exercise routines. There is a very high temptation during family gatherings you want to slow down on some of our routines. During this period when we’re usually laid back and want to take everything slowly but this should not include your daily exercise routines. Even if you are on vacation or out of town for the family reunion, be sure to make time to get in some type of exercise each day. One way to make this easy is to adopt some simple exercises like routines like; walking, squats, skipping for a few minutes in the morning and evenings. Also, if you have the opportunity to lift some weights, this will help you lose weight faster.
  3. Eat your breakfast. Surprised right? You might be wondering how this could help but if you learn not to skip breakfast in the morning, you’ll feel less hungry during the day and so would be able to resist the temptation to indulge or overeat. Eating breakfast also helps you jump-start your metabolism, helping you burn fat faster.
  4. Choose foods that are high in fiber. Eating foods that are high in fiber such as beans, vegetables, and most fruit, will help tame your appetite so that you don’t feel too hungry too often. This also helps to keep your digestive system functioning properly so that you don’t store up more than what is necessary within your system.
  5. Have a small healthy snack before going to that party or Family dinner. It has been shown that eating a small healthy snack before attending a party helps to keep you from overindulging while at the party. The snack will make you feel like you have food in your system so you won’t be craving food at the party while you’re waiting to be served.
  6. Avoid foods that are high in sugar. One of the very sure ways to lower your sweets intake during this time of the year is to replace them with fruit. Fruits such as strawberries, cherries, and blueberries are naturally sweet and tend to provide the same feeling and effect as those you would get from indulging in sweets.
  7. Stay conscious. This is probably the most important one. The way you think directly affects what you do. You should constantly remind yourself that you cannot afford to eat whatever you want. If you don’t, you’ll eventually end up eating whatever you want which means you’re going to overeat and gain weight. I’m sure you do not intend to go down this path so it is better to think ahead about how what you eat now will affect your health in the long run and save yourself the trouble.

By adopting these 7 tips, I’m very positive that you’ll be able to have a very great time around this season and not suffer any damning consequences as a result of the pleasures that come with the season. These tips will help you eat what you want while still helping you maintain a healthy diet this coming season.

The end of the year is not a time to indulge recklessly, rather it’s a time to eat in moderation.

Tell yourself constantly that you can do it and you will be able to do it!

Remember, you are what you eat!

With Love and gratitude as always, Xo!
