Creating A Healthy Home

Creating a safe and healthy home for the family is something everyone should aspire to, however, not everyone has the right information on how best to go about it. Most times, people associate having a healthy home with having a clean and organized home where there are no sharp or harmful objects kept safely within the reach of children. Although this is a major part of having a healthy home, the concept however goes beyond all those.

Having a healthy home will usually include a number of elements, beginning from the materials used to construct the home, to picking the right doors and windows and applying them properly so as to create a healthy indoor environment for everyone inside as well as making sure to use non-toxic cleaning products whenever you’re cleaning the house.

While I may not be suggesting any major remodeling works just in case you’re not ready to incur such costs, the good news is that there are still things you can do around your house to make it cleaner and safer for everyone in it

Below is a list of five suggestions that can assist you in creating a healthy home environment.

  1. Clean air and Circulation

There are several techniques you can adopt to make the air in your home cleaner and healthier for you and your loved ones.

Consider using an indoor Air Purifier, this helps to filter out dust and other impurities like germs, mold, smoke that may be contained in the air around us thereby increasing the quality of the air we breathe. Air purifiers help to neutralize some of the threats caused by air pollution that may arise from outside of the house and even from activities within the house.

Leave the doors between rooms open most of the time and also leave windows open as much as possible in order to allow for a good supply of fresh outdoor air in and out of the house. Installing exhaust fans in your bathrooms can also help to remove moisture and chemicals regularly from your home.

Upgrade the air filters on your furnace. You can make use of the pleated ones that capture smaller particles that may escape the usual furnace filters. You can also do well to change them regularly (as often as the manufacturer recommends) so that you’re sure the filters in your furnace are in good working condition.

Adopt the use of indoor houseplants to also serve as a natural purifier of your home’s air.

2. Dust-proof Your Home

Rid your house of dust and other harmful air particles by making use of a damp cloth to dust your rooms and knickknacks regularly. Replace dust-collecting blinds and long drapes with window shades or washable curtains and clean your fans regularly to make sure they are not releasing dust into the air whenever you use them.

Dust your hardwoods, tiles, and laminate flooring regularly with a dust mop or a vacuum made for hard flooring. Remember also to vacuum your carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture regularly. Consider using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter as they are more effective as well as a bagless vacuum to avoid the exposure of dust when trying to change the bag.

  1. Go Natural and Non-Toxic.

Adopt the use of Natural and non-toxic cleaning products to always give your home that pleasant fragrance of cleanliness and freshness every time. Many of the household cleaners we use at home have high levels of ammonia or bleach so consider using the safer alternatives mentioned above.

Fill your homes too with natural and earth-friendly products that are available on the market today like; organic clothing, cotton towels, linens, organic candles, home décor accessories, cork flooring, wool carpet, etc. Also make use of safe, non-toxic interior paints that have very low VOC (volatile organic compounds) content, zero formaldehyde, and low odor.

  1. Check your Refrigerator

Creating a healthy home also implies making sure everyone in it is eating healthy. Ensure to read labels of food products for additives and preservatives. If you’re not sure about the labels, do some little research and find out those which are unhealthy or unnecessary. If you can, lean towards a much more organic, fresh, seasonal, and local food for you and everyone in your home. This may be very difficult to achieve but if you do, you’ll find that it’s one of the best ways to achieve a healthy life for you and your loved ones.

  1. Regularly assess your home

The obvious places are usually the largest places so start from there. Check the Cabinets often as most of the toxicity you’ll find in the house is usually found in products we purchase and keep under the sink, in medicine cabinets, or shelved somewhere in the garage.

Remember also to check your pet and plant products. Check also to see the ingredients used for your pet shampoos and flea control products to know if they are harmful products contained within. Always be on the lookout for natural alternatives if they’re available.

Creating a healthy home doesn’t have to be a difficult and tedious experience. Start from the obvious places like the open spaces, and your home fittings before moving to the more detailed parts like the food labels and the chemical ingredients in your home products.

Try using any of the suggestions listed above to see if you can create a clean, toxin-free, and healthy home environment for you and your loved ones. There are also numerous resources out there including books, articles, and websites, you can consult in order to find more useful information that will help you achieve this goal.
