The Importance of a Consistent Sleep Schedule

There are several strategies an individual can adopt so as to enjoy a better quality of sleep, however, the strategy adopted would depend on the needs of the individual.

It may be that what is required is a stricter sleep schedule or better bedtime habits or it could just be making some adjustments to his or her daily lifestyle choices. Hence it is important to first understand the underlying problems behind difficulties in sleeping before deciding what strategy to adopt to solve the problem.

Nevertheless, by maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, you will feel more aware and invigorated during your day-to-day activities. To be able to achieve this, you’ll need to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day; doing this over time will allow your body to get into a predictable rhythm that it can then take advantage of to achieve a good night’s rest whenever you sleep.

Our bodies typically have internal clocks that generally let us know things like; when we should be awake, when we should be asleep, when we should be hungry, when we should be thirsty etc. One of the best ways to maximize the benefits that our body gets from our sleep time is to have a consistent sleep schedule that dictates to you the same time you should go to bed every night and when to wake up every morning.

This doesn’t automatically imply that everyone must get 8 straight hours of sleep every night; although this is usually recommended. However, your body may require only 5 or 6 hours of sleep or even 9 to 10 hours of sleep every night for it to function at its best. The most important point here is going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.

If you can adopt a consistent sleep schedule, then you can expect to receive all or most of the 7 benefits as listed below:

1.      It will enable you to fall asleep faster and easier

2.      You will wake up with greater ease.

3.      Your sleep will be more restful

4.      It will take a shorter time for your body to be fully awake in the morning

5.      It reduces/eliminates early morning fatigue

6.      You will have more energy to prosecute your activities for the day

7.      You will not be easily tired during the day

Remember that adopting a consistent sleep schedule is not the only way to improve the quality of your sleep. You can also adopt other techniques like; making sure that you have a relaxing bedtime routine, avoiding bright screens and loud sounds an hour or two before bedtime, not eating or drinking too many moments before you go to bed, etc.

If you find that you struggle to fall asleep at night, then you can also adopt other techniques that can help you relax before bedtime. You can choose to have a bath, read a book, listen to some cool music or do some slow and undemanding stretches.

Whatever activity you choose, try not to do it while you’re in bed: you should subconsciously program your mind to associate sleep with your bed, that way you will find it easier to fall asleep whenever you lie down on your bed at night.

You can decide to give yourself a 30-day challenge to see if your sleep habits will improve. Resolve to go to bed and wake up at a set time every day, without fail, for the next 30 days. At the end of the 30-day challenge, you’ll be able to tell whether or not the quality of your sleep has improved or not.

Give yourself a regular sleep schedule and see how much it improves your energy during the day.

The quality of rest you get at night goes a long way to determine the quality of life you’ll live during the day.

Don’t take my word for it, give it a try today!

With Love and gratitude as always, Xo!
